Hello everyone, we are Haruka and Alisa, and we are students at a private university in Tokyo.

We started this blog to study and learn more about the pros and cons of private university and college education.
We are interested in this topic because we feel that there is a big gap between foreign and Japanese education.

When a person who graduated an Ivy League school can get a very high paying job at an top level global company. On the contrary, a person who graduated an top level Japanese univeristy cannot get into an top level global company.
Why is that?
are we wasting out time, dreaming to be able to work at such companies?

We will be up posting entries atleast once a week, talking about problems within and out Japan about its educational problems.

Is it all about the money?

Since we just chose out topic today(5/8) we do not have that many information about this issue, but our current pros and cons are:
PRO
college/university education is necessary to get a decent job.
It is important to study a variety of things in order to have background knowledge on various issues.

CON
The level of education differs from the price of each school and its teachers
The higher the level of school, the expencive it gets.
We don't study things that are necessary in real life job.

Please, please give us your opinions, questions, or any sorts of comments :)
This is our classroom!!!

  4. It seems that the impetus for your research comes from a sort of complaint you have about the differences between the outcomes of a private university education in Japan and in the US. You point out that whereas a degree from a top private (esp. ivy league) school in the US can lead to a position at leading global corporations, that's not the case for graduates of Japan's top universities. So, you wonder if it's a waste to attend a university that offers degrees which might not lead to career goals that are not as high as you wish them to be.

First of all, you start out with some assumptions that may or may not be true. Is it just your "impression" that "[graduates of] top level Japanese universities cannot get into top level global companies," or do you have some evidence (i.e., data) to back up your claim. Conversely, is it just through anecdotal evidence that you "know" that graduates of ivy league schools can get high paying jobs at top-level global companies? Have you researched that yet? Also, I wonder if you're aware that many public universities in the US are considered on a par with (or at a higher level) than some of the Ivy league universities. They have sometimes been called "public ivies."

You also seem to have the underlying assumption that if a university education doesn't lead to a job with a multi-national company, it's a waste of time and energy. I think you should look up the history of what's called a "liberal arts" education and its purposes. One purpose of it is to prepare students for the outside world and for a possible career. But, there are other aspects of it that involve cultivating people as intelligent individuals with enough knowledge of the arts (humanities) and sciences (both social and physical) to be good citizens, and to have wider/ deeper interests so they can get more satisfaction out of life. That's the ideal, at least.

The cons you listed in your list of "pros" and "cons" remind me of some of the arguments I've seen in what's been called the "uncollege" movement. You can check out some of their beliefs at http://www.uncollege.org/ .
